Background of the Study
Loan accessibility plays a critical role in fueling small business growth, especially in regions where entrepreneurial activities are burgeoning. First City Monument Bank (FCMB) in Kano State has developed loan products aimed at supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), recognizing that access to finance is a key driver of business expansion and economic development. In the current economic climate, where financial constraints often limit entrepreneurial potential, facilitating easier access to loans has emerged as a strategic priority for banks (Abubakar, 2023). FCMB’s initiatives focus on reducing bureaucratic hurdles, streamlining loan approval processes, and offering competitive interest rates to spur growth among small businesses.

Small businesses form the backbone of the Nigerian economy, yet many face challenges in securing the necessary capital to scale their operations. The availability of loans not only enables business owners to invest in new technologies and expand operations but also creates employment opportunities and fosters community development. FCMB’s tailored loan products are designed to address the unique needs of SMEs, taking into account the challenges of collateral requirements, repayment flexibility, and market volatility (Garba, 2024).

Despite these initiatives, several issues persist, including limited awareness of available loan products, stringent eligibility criteria, and delays in loan disbursement. These challenges impede the ability of small businesses to leverage credit for growth, thereby stunting overall economic development in Kano State. This study examines the effectiveness of FCMB’s loan accessibility programs in promoting small business growth, providing insights into how banks can better align their financial products with the needs of local entrepreneurs (Usman, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Small businesses in Kano State continue to struggle with accessing affordable loans, a challenge that impedes their growth potential. Although FCMB has introduced various loan products aimed at supporting SMEs, the uptake remains suboptimal due to factors such as rigid eligibility criteria, lengthy processing times, and inadequate dissemination of information regarding available credit facilities (Yakubu, 2023). Many entrepreneurs report that bureaucratic delays and collateral requirements create barriers that prevent them from obtaining the necessary capital to expand their operations.

Additionally, the lack of customized loan products that cater to the specific financial needs of diverse small businesses further exacerbates the problem. Economic instability and fluctuating market conditions also add layers of complexity, making it difficult for banks to design loan schemes that are both profitable and accessible. This study seeks to uncover the underlying issues that limit loan accessibility and to evaluate how these limitations affect small business growth in the region. By identifying these challenges, the research aims to provide practical recommendations for enhancing the effectiveness of loan programs, thereby stimulating entrepreneurial growth and contributing to regional economic development.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of loan accessibility on the growth of small businesses in Kano State.
  2. To identify the barriers that prevent SMEs from accessing loans from FCMB.
  3. To propose measures to improve loan accessibility for small businesses.

Research Questions

  1. How does loan accessibility affect small business growth in Kano State?
  2. What are the primary barriers to obtaining loans from FCMB for SMEs?
  3. What strategies can be adopted to enhance loan accessibility for small business growth?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Increased loan accessibility is positively associated with small business growth.
  2. Stringent loan eligibility criteria negatively impact the ability of SMEs to access financing.
  3. Tailored loan products significantly improve the growth prospects of small businesses.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on FCMB’s loan products for small businesses in Kano State. Limitations include possible respondent bias, limited access to proprietary loan performance data, and external economic factors that may influence business growth.
